Pikesville 5k 2007

I must preface this by stating that I didn't try very hard at this race... And for good reason. I was on vacation and missed our 13 mile long run last weekend. As a result, I needed to make up some of that mileage this week. So, yesterday I went out and ran 10 miles. I do not recommend running 10 miles the day before a race. I had originally planned to try for a PR for this race, but when I found out I was going to miss the long run and then make it up this weekend, it naturally put all plans for a PR out of my mind. I did quite the opposite of a PR - my worst 5k time ever.

Starting out, I felt my legs crying at me right off the bat. They weren't sore until I started running. I suffered through the first mile in 12:10, which is fairly respectable and would have put me at the finish in 37:48 (in the middle of my 5k times). Second mile was fairly miserable - the sun was out, it was hot and the Pikesville 5k course is hilly. They did a wonderful thing (and I say that dripping with sarcasm) by changing the course so that we run up a bit of an alley rather than out onto Hooks Lane, which added an extra hill into the course (something we really needed, uh huh). This happened in mile 2 and I was starting to feel just terrible, my hands got numb and I started hoping I'd pass out so that they'd pull me off of the course. I just don't have the mental energy to keep up with such torture for only a 5k.

The second mile was 12:44, still pretty decent, but after I passed the second mile marker, I pretty much decided to give up. I wasn't going to get a PR, I felt awful, and I'd gotten my ten miles worth of exercise the day before. So, I walked almost the entire third mile. Dianne almost caught up with me, the rest of my group was WAY ahead, and I ran past Davida for the picture that she took of me.

Oh well. I really don't care about it at all. Maybe I'll squeeze in another PR-potential 5k later in the year. In hindsight, I should have just run 13 miles on Saturday and slept in today.

Final time: an abysmal 41:31... bleh. See all the results
