Conversations with a Scammer

So, a friend of mine from PreviousEmployerRadioIndustry started talking to Todd in Facebook. As it turned out, it was pretty clear right away that his account had been hacked. See the funny Consumerist article on the subject.

Once Todd started talking to him, I logged on to Facebook and lo and behold, the scammer started talking to me too!!

First, Todd's conversation:
FakeLance: hey
FakeLance:how are you?
Todd: good, you?
FakeLance: not too good
Todd: no?
FakeLance: I had a trip to london yesterday
Todd: what's wrong?
FakeLance: I'm stranded in london
Todd: really? how did you get stranded there?
FakeLance: got mugged at a knife point
Todd: wow, are you okay?
FakeLance: all cash,credit card and phone was stolen
Todd: oh my, thats not good... are you okay? you aren't hurt, are you?
FakeLance: It was suck and scary experience and i was hit on my head,but thank God i still have my life and passport saved
Todd: wow, you are certainly lucky
FakeLance: yeah
FakeLance: I am even in he hotel right now, making use of the lobby computer
FakeLance: my flight leaves in few hours but am having problem paying the hotel bills here
Todd: cool. hey, when you get back from the trip, i think you and I should get an apartment together. I just can't live the lie anymore
Todd: Lance, i love you
FakeLance: ok
FakeLance: wondering if you could loan me $920 to sort out the hotel bills, I will definitely reimburse it back to you tomorrow
Todd: really? thats great
Todd: can we get a pony too... I really like ponies?
Todd: Only $920? Sure, no problem... I was thinking you needed more money than that... are you sure you don't need more?
Todd: You must have been staying at a low budget hotel... hahaha
You don't have permission to chat with this person.


So, the guy did the old "Facebook Block" at the end. I decided to keep the guy on the horn as long as possible, trying to get a hold of Lance, to no avail, though I did report the issue to Facebook Security (will that do any good??).

FakeLance: hey
FakeLance: how are you?
Kimberly: hey Lance
FakeLance: I really need your help
Kimberly: oh yeah? what's up?
FakeLance: I had a trip to london yesterday
Kimberly: oh yeah?
FakeLance: so I got mugged at knifes point last night
Kimberly: hm, that's terrible
FakeLance: all cash,credit card and phone was stolen
Kimberly: you should contact the US Embassy
FakeLance: It was suck and scary experience and i was hit on my head,but thank God i still have my life and passport saved
Kimberly: here is the number to the US Embassy in London 0-11-44-207-894-0007
FakeLance: ok
FakeLance: my flight leaves in few hours but am having problem paying the hotel bills here
Kimberly: i can imagine that would be a problem
Kimberly: Have you called the Embassy??
FakeLance: my phone was stolen during the incident
FakeLance: but i'll try and make some call with the hotel telephone
Kimberly: they will let you call collect.
FakeLance: wondering if you could loan me $920 to sort out the hotel bills, I will definitely reimburse it back to you tomorrow
FakeLance: ok?
Kimberly: sure, of course
Kimberly: can i send it to you in a paypal account?
Kimberly: actually, i have your ING Direct information, i can send you an electric check (from that Video game you sold me a while back)
Kimberly: i'll initiate that right now.
FakeLance: do you know of any western union outlet nearby?
FakeLance: you can have it send to me through western union outlet around you
Kimberly: you should be able to access it in your ING account. I already did the transfer.
Kimberly: western union sucks, don't use them
FakeLance: but i can't account my account here
Kimberly: why not? you can access facebook
FakeLance: I would have withdraw the cash from my acc
Kimberly: ING is online
Kimberly: you can transfer the money to your hotel
FakeLance: am making use of the hotel lobby computer right now
Kimberly: or, you can print the money out
Kimberly: what hotel are you staying at?
Kimberly: i will give them a call
Kimberly: then, i can charge your expenses onto my credit card
(Long Pause)
Kimberly: hello?
FakeLance: Nexton Hotel
Kimberly: I'm not seeing that in google... what is the address?
Kimberly: or, just give me their number and I'll call them and sort this all out for you
FakeLance: ok
Kimberly: hey, should i also call your wife? she might want to know what's going on
FakeLance: here is the hotel tel : +447035913733
FakeLance: she has try to wire the money to me online but she's having problem with her credit cards limit
FakeLance: so are you calling the hotel now?
(Stalling, wishing that I could call international phones from work)
Kimberly: i just need to fix something here at work real quick
Kimberly: That's interesting, that doesn't seem to be the number of the Nexton Hotel
Kimberly: and i still can't find the nexton hotel on google
Kimberly: i think you might have something mixed up
Kimberly: what's your wife's name again?
FakeLance: Barbet
(arg! It's on Lance's Facebook page, so of course the scammer knows it)
Kimberly: oh right.
Kimberly: Remember when we worked together? What company was that where we worked?
Kimberly: How come the number for the hotel that you gave me takes me to this website when i google it?

And at that point, I, too, was blocked. I should have waited to see what company he'd say since my Employment info is listed in Facebook except for my current company. He had a 1 in 5 chance of getting it right.

I had all kinds of other ideas about how to handle this. I'm hoping Lance gets it sorted out.

omg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! facebook is being hacked?! that' awful. seriously. i hate scammers.

Update - Lance is back on Facebook and all is well.

These rental scammers ticked me off so much I decided to create a rental scam quiz so people could get a score and see if they are being scammed or not. Hope it can help someone.

Sorry for just not finding this post. Thank's Kim and Todd for handling this appropriately. And for your quick notification to me. I was able to disable my account quickly. I only know of one other friend that he got to. I hope there weren't others (and that they didn't succomb to him and are afraid/embarrassed to tell me).
Anyway, thanks for everything!
