My running group usually runs right near our store on our week day runs. During the winter, we can't run on several of our normal routes because it's too dark. But, we do run through this townhouse neighborhood just up the way from us. Typically, there are several cars going in and out of the main road, but there are speed bumps and it's a residential neighborhood. We run towards traffic, wear reflective gear and carry lights.
Last night, we were off of the main road, heading back toward it, when a woman in an SUV drove our way and stopped about 50 feet ahead of us and then laid on her horn. When we got up to her, she rolled down her window and started yelling:
Woman: You can't run here! It is dangerous to everyone!!
Me: Seriously? Do you realize you're talking on your cell phone while you're driving right now? [note: talking on a cell phone while driving without a hands free device is illegal in Maryland]
Running Friend Robin: You're doing something illegal!
Me: Of course we can run here.
Woman: You cannot run here! I'm going to call the police!
Me: I'm sorry, but isn't this a public road?
Woman: Yes! [spoken as if I somehow proved her point]
Me: Well, then we can run here!
At this point, the three of us just ran off.
But, I gave it some thought, and I've decided that if I come across this woman again, I will ask her to run with us. That ought to confuse her, I would think. Join us, crazy lady! Come to the dark side!

Haha...that's crazy! I like how you were able to put her in her place though. :-)
Wow, that is totally absurd indeed. Why can't people mind their own business? I think asking her to join you would be perfect! :)
I swear, it's always those w/ the distracted driving that try to take that kind of a stand! I don't get it.
Fingers crossed for no ice tonight and a run tomorrow!
Nice. Geez.
However, it is illegal in NC to walk or run on the road if there is a sidewalk available. My Galloway group actually had the police come and inform us of this once.
Not sure what the laws are like in MD, though.
I fully agree about asking her to run with you. I doubt she'd do it though. Does she beat the dog lady by the Monastery?
I contend that the dog lady by the Monastery was worse.
this woman is interesting. although it wouldn't surprise me if one day the govt tries to pass a law that you can't run or walk on the road...
That's totally nuts! I'm glad you were with a group and you were all able to go on your way and keep running!
